When was the last time you took a trip to a new destination?
Usually when you want to take a trip, you consult a map. The farther away your destination, the more options for different routes you could take. You can choose the most direct path, or you can choose the scenic route.
But what do you do when you want to go somewhere that you absolutely don’t know how to get to? Go to the internet - right? There you can find ALL kinds of advice. Some articles might tell you to take an 18 hour flight for the most direct route, while others might suggest that you break your flight up into different legs, so you don’t miss the incredible, must-see sights you’d be passing over on a direct flight.
Being an entrepreneur is like embarking on a trip you have absolutely no idea how to get to. You know where you want to go. You can visualize what you want your business to look like, but you don’t know how to get there.
So you turn to the internet. You find other people who have made the trip before. People who have successfully built thriving businesses. From their expertise, you draft a rough outline of the route you think will get you from point A to B the best.
Most entrepreneurs want the fastest, straightest route possible. And it’s good to have a plan to help you move in the right direction. But, your business is personal to you. It is unique in the same way you are. Your route will be too.
What every seasoned entrepreneur will tell you is that their destination evolved throughout their journey, and the route did too. They’ll tell you that what they thought they needed and what they expected to happen - didn’t. They would assure you that there were MANY detours, some that seemed miserable, and some that were incredibly delightful. They will tell you that both the miserable and the delightful were necessary ‘must-see sights' that were important in the development of their businesses and development as an entrepreneur.
Know your destination, and know that it might evolve.
Plan a route, and know that there will be detours.
Embrace the opportunities and lessons the unexpected scenic routes offer.
Don’t despair, this is YOUR unique journey from YOUR unique point A to YOUR unique point B.
