Taking Action

Writer's picture: Misty ThomasMisty Thomas

Have you ever set a goal, one that is really important to you, but you just can’t seem to make yourself take any action toward reaching the goal? You might have a plan, ideas or creations you want to put into the world, but when it comes down to it, you just don’t have motivation. You feel that you just can’t make it happen.

In our lives, there are things we can’t control. Those things are called circumstances. They include what other people do, what’s happening in the world, and events that have happened in the past. On the other hand, there are some key things we can control: our thoughts, feelings, actions, and results.

Some people are completely unaware that they can control their thoughts. Our thoughts fuel our feelings, and every action we take is because we want to feel a certain way. When you start a business, one of your motivators might be to make money. But why do you want to make money? Because you want to feel successful. From this example you can see that we take action, because we want to experience a certain feeling.

Our thoughts fuel our feelings, which fuel our actions, which create our results. Our thoughts are at the very beginning of this domino effect, so when we want to make a change, we need to start with our thoughts. In order to change thoughts, we have to know what we are thinking. We do this by becoming more aware of our thoughts, slowing down and examining what you’re thinking. This takes practice!

Break apart your thoughts and decide if you even like them or not! Are your thoughts true; is there evidence to back up what you’re thinking? What feeling are your thoughts creating? What actions are you taking (or not taking) when you feel that way? When you begin to observe your thoughts you might find a lot of them are causing you unnecessary pain and trouble. In this case, a change is needed!

When you understand the impact your thoughts have, and your ability to change them, you will begin to feel capable and more in control of your life, which will lead you to take actions that will bring about results you like!

When people have a hard time feeling motivated with their goals, it’s because they are trying to change their actions without making any change to their thoughts and feelings. They are fighting their thoughts and feelings instead of using them to fuel their actions. When you change the root of the problem, your thoughts, you will find it much easier to take action!
