Perfectionism

Are you letting it hold you back?

Perfectionism is a double edged sword. On one side it motivates us to do a good job. Be thorough, and detail oriented. And on the other side, it prevents us from creating and contributing all the good that we could. Sometimes we hold onto perfectionism, because we believe it helps us, without recognizing the harm it is causing. Is perfectionism wreaking havoc for you? Do you find yourself spending unreasonable amounts of time or energy trying to get it ‘just right’ on projects? Or, do you not even begin the project that you want to do, because you don’t think you’ll be able to do it perfectly? If you can relate to either of these scenarios, you are not alone! Most of us have some varying degree of perfectionism. Here’s how to combat it: - Remind yourself that ‘perfect’ doesn’t exist. You can keep chasing it, but you will never catch it. - Don’t evaluate your self worth by your performance. Your performance has absolutely nothing to do with your value. - Move to the next thing when your project is ‘good enough’ - you can always go back and make improvements as needed. - Celebrate progress over perfection. If you wait for perfection, you’ll be waiting a long time! Notice the efforts you are making today. It will fuel you to keep pressing forward. Perfectionism keeps us living small. Don’t do that to yourself. You are made to grow, develop and expand. You have contributions to make in this world. Others need what you have to offer. Let go of the perfectionism that’s holding you back and be who you are meant to be my friend.
